Brrr… Turning the Heating Back On Already?

As we move towards autumn and temperatures begin to drop, many homeowners will soon be switching their heating systems back on after several months of being unused. While this is a normal part of preparing your home for the colder months, it is also a good time to check your heating system and pipework for potential leaks.

At Bedford Loss Assessors, water damage is one of the most common types of insurance claim we deal with. A small leak can quickly cause significant damage if it goes unnoticed.

What should you check?

Before turning your heating back on, take a few minutes to:

  • Check radiators, valves and exposed pipework for signs of leaks, corrosion or staining.

  • Look around your boiler for any signs of water or dampness.

  • Check ceilings and walls below bathrooms and heating systems for staining or previous water damage.

  • Check your boiler pressure and make sure it is within the manufacturer's recommended range.

  • Listen for any unusual noises when the heating system is switched on.

  • If your heating system has not been serviced recently, consider arranging a professional service.

It is also worth making sure you know where your main stopcock is located. If a pipe does fail, being able to turn off the water supply quickly can help limit the damage.

What if you discover a leak?

If you notice a leak, act quickly. Turn off the water supply where possible and take reasonable steps to prevent further damage. If it is safe to do so, move furniture and belongings away from the affected area and take photographs or videos of the damage.

Most home insurance policies provide some cover for Escape of Water, although the terms and conditions vary between policies. If you suffer significant water damage, it is always worth speaking to a Loss Assessor to consider your options and establish whether you have a valid claim.

Bedford Loss Assessors can manage the claim on your behalf, from the initial contact with your insurer through to negotiating the settlement with the insurer's Loss Adjuster. We look after everything, right up until you have received your settlement funds.
