I know it's still August, however with the kids gone back to school and the weather taking a turn for the worse, its time to think ahead.

With the colder weather approaching, the risk of leaks in your home increases. Cold weather, heavy rain, and frost all put extra pressure on roofs, gutters, and pipework. Small problems that go unnoticed in summer—like loose tiles, blocked drains, or tiny cracks—can quickly turn into bigger issues once the temperature drops.

Pipes are especially vulnerable. During the summer months, heating systems are rarely used, which means problems in your boiler or pipework may have gone unnoticed. When the heating comes back on in winter, these hidden issues can lead to leaks. Frozen pipes are another common cause, as water expands when it freezes and can cause pipes to burst.

To reduce the risk, check your gutters are clear of leaves, look over your roof for damage, and make sure pipes in colder areas are properly insulated. It’s also worth switching your heating on for a short time before the cold sets in, just to ensure everything is working as it should.

A little preparation now can help prevent leaks and save you from costly repairs later in the year.

If your home is damaged by a leak, call Bedford Loss Assessors first. We handle everything—from notifying your home insurer about the damage to managing the claim all the way through to final settlement. Our job is to ensure you receive the full settlement you’re entitled to.
