Managing A House Fire Claim: Part 1

conor2585

Shortly before Christmas, a family contacted us after a devastating fire had damaged their home. The fire had started in their neighbour’s house, and strong winds caused the flames to spread to their property.

Thankfully no one was injured in the incident. However, seeing your home and personal belongings destroyed through no fault of your own can be truly heartbreaking. In such situations, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed, unsure, and uncertain about where to begin. That’s where the expertise of Bedford Loss Assessors can make all the difference. We arrived at their home on the morning of the fire and got to work straight away.

We began by reviewing the Insured’s policy details and notifying Insurers of the loss.  A Loss Adjuster was appointed by insurers and a joint inspection of the property was organized for two days’ time. We started documenting the whole property, taking photographs, videos and measurements throughout.

As the damage to the property was so severe, the home was clearly uninhabitable.  The most urgent matter was to find suitable alternative accommodation for the family.  We advised our client on what their policy covered in this regard, and they thankfully sourced a property in the area.  This was a blessing in the current rental market.

Next, we coordinated with a local contractor to secure the property by clearing any loose debris, installing scaffolding to protect neighbouring houses, and setting up fencing to ensure security.

We also engaged a structural engineering firm, Aidan O’Connell & Associates, specialists in structural fire damage. They promptly arrived on-site the following day to begin their surveys and assessments.

We worked closely with the homeowners to create a detailed inventory of their contents and personal belonging destroyed in the fire. This comprehensive list will serve as the basis for the contents claim to be submitted to Insurers.

We are now working alongside our Engineer, nominated contractor, and Insurer's Adjuster to progress the claim and aim to complete the rebuilding of their home as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, incidents like this fire cannot be resolved overnight. However, we are committed to supporting our client throughout the entire process, minimizing stress and disruption wherever possible, and ensuring that their claim is handled fairly by Insurers and settled to its full entitlement.

We look forward to sharing our next update, highlighting the progress made in reinstating our client’s home.
